100 years of women’s suffrage in the Netherlands 2019 in coincard

The much-loved numismatic coincard, that is published every year, bears the theme "100 years of women's suffrage in the Netherlands" this year. On both sides of the coincard several women are featured who fought for women’s suffrage, including Alletta Jacobs.

Nowadays, every Dutch citizen from the age of 18 can vote in elections for the House of Representatives, the Provincial States, the City Council and the European Parliament. However, only in 1917 was the "passive electoral right" for women introduced in the Netherlands. From that moment on, women could be elected for political positions, but were still not allowed to vote themselves. In 1919, women were given the coveted "active electoral right" that finally allowed them to vote themselves. ©Atria

Obverse
The three queens, Wilhelmina, Juliana and Beatrix, adorn the historic pennies on the front of the coins.

On the front of the coincard is a very famous image: the Sinterklaas meeting in 1915. This was one of the protest meetings organized by the Propaganda Committee for Women's Electoral Rights.

Reverse
The reverse side of the pennies contains the characteristic "5 CENT" with an orange branch and, in the case of the penny with Beatrix, an interrupted rectangle.

On the reverse side of the coincard is one of the most famous Dutch feminists: Aletta Jacobs. Aletta Jacobs was the first woman in the Netherlands to get a university education, the first woman to become a doctor and the first woman to get a PhD. In 1882, she wanted to be on the Amsterdam election list, but was refused. She therefore joined the Free Women's Association and later became president of the Women's Association for Women's suffrage in the Netherlands. ©Atria
