40 years Discovery – Medal in Coincard

For 40 years now, Discovery (now Discovery+ on HBO Max) has captivated viewers around the world with adventurous series, interesting documentaries, and fascinating stories about science, nature, technology, and history. To celebrate this milestone, the Royal Dutch Mint is releasing a special Medal in Coincard.

A global phenomenon

Discovery Channel was founded 40 years ago, in 1985. What started as a modest channel focused primarily on educational programming slowly evolved into a well-known brand with many globally recognized shows. For four decades, Discovery has been inspiring generations with stories from all over the world – and beyond! 

The channel has distinguished itself not only through high-quality productions and storytelling, but also with its stunning visuals and ability to make complex topics accessible to a wide audience. Discovery opens the door to new, unknown worlds – a formula that has proven successful for years.

Design

The 40 Years Discovery Medal in Coincard is a beautiful way to celebrate this anniversary. On the obverse of the Medal, an astronaut can be seen in space, with on the bottom right Earth and on top in the middle the planet Saturn. Also the text “Explore your World” can be seen. On the reverse the text “Since 85 Discovery Channel” is visible, this is a reference to the year the network was founded.

The medal is placed in a beautifully designed coincard that reflects the festive nature of the occasion: the front proudly features the 40 years Discovery logo. On the back, we take a trip down memory lane, showcasing the style and design reminiscent of the channel’s founding year: 1985.
