65 Years of miffy in Coincard

It’s Miffy’s 65^th birthday and we celebrate with her! A white bunny in the garden of a holiday home in Egmond aan Zee inspired Dick Bruna to create Miffy (“nijntje” in Dutch). The stories he wrote about this world famous bunny have been translated in over 50 languages, and worldwide over 85 million miffy books have been sold. The Royal Dutch Mint celebrates Miffy’s 65^th birthday with a tribute to Dick Bruna in three festive issues!

A tribute to Dick Bruna
On 23 August 1927 Dick Bruna was born in Utrecht, the Netherlands. For over sixty years he created picture books in his signature format: compact, square books with twelve pictures on the right and four lines of (rhyming) text on the left. Both the use of warm colours and the thick black outlines (which show the “heartbeat” of the artist) are immediately recognisable as Dick Bruna’s. For decades, Bruna’s picture books have been loved by all ages, in countries all over the world. On 16 February 2017, Bruna died at age 89 in his hometown Utrecht, where the Miffy Museum and an actual Miffy statue can be found.

Design
The anniversary coincard contains an official Dutch 2 euro coin from 2020, struck in the new Mint in Utrecht, and a gold coloured issue that pays tribute to illustrator and writer Dick Bruna. The obverse shows Bruna’s characteristic portrait and the inscription “Dick Bruna 1927 – 2017”. On the reverse you will find the Miffy anniversary logo and the text “65 years of miffy”. The Dutch 2 euro coin 2020 will not go into circulation and cannot be obtained otherwise, other than in the Dutch coin sets. That makes the coincard in honour of Miffy’s 65^th birthday extra special!
