The beloved numismatic coincard of 2020 is in the sign of this year’s theme “75 years of freedom”. The design of the coincard is in line with the theme and contains an original zinc 1 guilder cent.

Zinc coins were introduced in the Netherlands in 1941 during the German occupation. Dutch citizens were supposed to exchange their metal coins for the new zinc ones. There was however hardly any response to it. The zinc coins had no privy mark but did depict the Staff or Mercury, which is the Royal Dutch Mint mint mark. The zinc coins were also never recorded in the official Mint Act, even though the mintage had taken place in ’s Rijksmunt (the mint in Utrecht).

The obverse of the zinc cent depicts the “rechtkruis” (right cross): an early Germanic expression of the sun cross. On the obverse the inscription “1 ct”, four waves, three wheat ears and the year of issue can be found. The stamps for the zinc coins were made according to a design by Nico de Haas.
