On the Aruban commemorative coin of the year 2021 you see the green iguana, or “Yuwana” in Papiamento. Yuwanas are born climbers, but they can also swim and dive like the best! Their diet consists mainly of leaves and fruits. They know how to choose the leaves that contain the most nutrients. The biggest threat to the Yuwana are humans: their meat is a beloved delicacy in the soup and so are their eggs. This has given the Yuwana the status of an endangered species.
