Anno 2000, the Spiennes Flint Mines were included in the UNESCO World Heritage List of Natural and Cultural World Heritage Sites. These Neolithic mines were discovered by accident during the 19th century during the construction of a railway line. They are one of the oldest witnesses of human industrial activity in Europe. Between 4200 and 2500 years before our era, huge quantities of flint were mined here, on an area of more than 100 hectares.
Flint is a hard sedimentary rock composed mainly of silicon. Due to its homogeneous structure, the chipped pieces are razor-sharp, which was obviously ideal for primitive man to use to make all kinds of instruments, tools and weapons. But - what was especially useful for him - by striking flint against an iron-containing rock, sparks were generated and fire could be produced immediately. Hence the name flint.
Flint in the lead
The obverse of the silver 10 euro coin 2025 depicts a particularly realistic representation of a flint hand axe, set in a rustic textured setting (the entrance to the flint mine) around which an English inscription has been elaborated in perfectly matching typography. The coin side shows King Philip looking to the right, his monogram and the year 2025 in an eleven-sided template. The outer edge features the trilingual country name, the mint house and mint master sign and the mint value.
