Roger Raveel (1921-2013) can be considered one of Belgium's most important post-war artists. Raveel even received a knighthood in 1995 and the Roger Raveel Museum was founded in 1999. Raveel's work is difficult to define. It is characterized by a combination of figurative and abstract art, both timeless and contemporary. Squares play a major role, sometimes white, then brightly coloured or as a mirror. In addition to being a painter, Raveel was also a skilled graphic artist and he made ceramics.
Your Own Raveel at Home!
With his 100th anniversary coming up, the Royal Mint of Belgium, in collaboration with Atelier Raveel, is issuing a Silver Proof coin worth 20 euros that will showcase the artist. The obverse shows a representation of "Self-portrait with square" from 1978. In the original work, the square is yellow, the coin shows it as a mirror, which highlights the Proof quality of the coin. At the bottom right is the authentic signature of the famous painter. Furthermore, the coin shows the texts “Roger” on the left, “Raveel” at the bottom, and the year of birth 1921 and the anniversary year 2021 on the right. The luxurious ceramic coin holder was made in the factories of Royal Boch: a renowned Belgian producer of earthenware since 1841. In this coin holder, the work of art can be displayed like a real Raveel!
