Belgium 20 Euro "Leuven University” Silver Proof

Knowledge knows no end, a fact proven by the Katholieke Universiteit Leuven and Université Catholique de Louvain, both being universities of great value! Both institutions are among the oldest in Europe. After all, both KU Leuven and UCLouvain grew out of the medieval University of Leuven, founded in 1425. 

This 600th anniversary will therefore be celebrated by both universities throughout the year 2025 with events, initiatives, new projects and an official commemorative coin, among other things! The 20-euro coin with a diameter of no less than 37mm, is struck in the very highest Proof quality and is strictly limited to only 2,500 copies worldwide.

600 years at Crown size! 

The Silver Proof coin shows in the centre the Sedes sapientiae statue of Leuven, representing St Mary with the infant Jesus on her lap. In the background, the lower circle is filled with scientifically inspired line drawings; in the upper circle is the text: SEDES SAPIENTIAE ORA PRO NOBIS [Seat of Wisdom, pray for us ], below that UCLOUVAIN 1425 2025 KU LEUVEN. In the circular text above again the names of the jubilee university institutes and the dates, decorated with small circles. At the bottom the jubilee reference ‘600’. The coin was designed by Iris Bruijns.

This silver Proof 20 euro coin not only has a beautiful obverse design, but also shows King Philip's portrait! In Luc Luycx's design, King Philip looks to the right, where his monogram is also depicted.
