The Marsupilami sprung from the mind of André Franquin, clearly deducible from the 'Latin' species name (Marsupilamus Fantasii or Marsupilami franquini). The Marsupilami, like humans, is a solider, otherwise any resemblance ends. This fictional creature is an egg-laying mammal, is as an adult one metre tall, has a tail about eight metres long and is most common with yellow and black-spotted fur. It uses its agile tail for everything; to grab things, propel itself, swim, eliminate enemies and more. Originally he comes from the fictional South American country of Palombia. It feeds on fruit, nuts, fleas and piranhas. His characteristic call is "Houba Houba!".

The Marsupilami first appeared in 1952 in Spirou and the Heirs, a story in the Spirou and Fantasio series. Spirou and Fantasio find the animal during their journey in Palombia and take it with them to Europe. The character caught on and appeared in several of the duo's albums. In 1987, Marsupilami got his own comic book series, in the 1990s two animated series and in 2013 a film.

Available in two beautiful coin editions!
The Royal Mint of Belgium celebrates the 70th anniversary of the striking animal with a 5-euro coin issued in two variants: classic relief and with colour. Both coins feature the jubilee Marsupilami in full on the obverse, with its characteristic pose and distinctive super long tail. The 5 euro coin in colour shows the birthday Marsupilami in the original colours of the albums and also comes in slightly different coincard packaging. This makes the difference between the two 5-euro coins even greater, which also makes it particularly tempting to order both versions at once.
