In the 100th anniversary year of the Belga (1926), the Belga Gold is being revived as Belgium's official bullion (investor) coin.
A symbol of Belgian pride
The Belga Gold is not only an investment in gold, but also a tribute to Belgium's rich history and culture. The coin features a timeless design that reflects Belgian identity, with an image that emphasises national unity and pride. The front shows a stylised iris, the floral emblem of the Brussels region. The reverse shows a modern and simplified Belgian lion on a shield. Above it is the name of the country in the three national languages: BELGIQUE BELGIË BELGIEN. Designer Iris Bruijns (IB) of the Royal Mint of Belgium used the Brel font by Belgian designer Jo De Baerdemaeker (Studio Type), who previously designed the government's corporate identity typography. The reverse side also features the various marks of the mint master (an Erlenmeyer flask with a star) and the mint mark (the Mercury staff) of the Royal Dutch Mint.
History
The Belga was the name of a Belgian coin introduced in 1926 as part of a monetary reform to combat inflation after the First World War. The Belga was introduced as part of the “Belga plan” of Finance Minister Émile Francqui, who wanted to stabilise the Belgian franc by linking it to the gold standard. Although the Belga itself was not a gold coin, its name symbolised the ambition to back the currency with gold reserves. The Belga was a silver coin with a value of 5 Belgian francs. The currency was minted between 1929 and 1944 and was intended as a stable means of payment during a period of economic turmoil.
For investors and collectors
The Belga Gold is intended for both investors and (novice) collectors. Due to its high purity and official character, the coin is not only a safe haven for capital preservation, but also a valuable piece of Belgian numismatic history.
