Emperor Charles V (Ghent, 24 February 1500 — Cuacos de Yuste, Spain, 21 September 1558) belonged to the House of Habsburg. During his reign, his empire grew into the largest European empire since Charlemagne. It covered all Dutch provinces, Spain and the Holy Roman Empire. Including the American and Asian territories, his Empire was even larger than the earlier Roman Empire. His rule marked the transition from the Middle Ages to the New Age.
Charles V is almost always depicted with the Order of the Golden Fleece around his neck, the symbol of an exclusive knighthood. Already on his first birthday, Karel was included in the world famous knighthood. After the death of his father in 1506, Karel succeeded him as grand master. In 1516 he increased the statutory number of knights from thirty-one to fifty-one: ten new places for Spain, and ten for Germany and the Burgundian Netherlands. This made the Golden Fleece the most important European knighthood.
In 1521, Charles V introduced a golden guilder of 20 stuivers, a new unit of account: the Carolus guilder. In 1543, a silver Carolus guilder was also added. After the abdication of Charles V, the coins were no longer minted. However, the (Carolus) guilder remained a unit of account in the Low Countries until the introduction of the euro.
The 2 euro Proof shows Carolus V with his typical Renaissance beret and the Order of the Golden Fleece around his neck, looking at the jubilee Golden Carolus coin. The composition of the 10 euro Silver Proof is the same as the original silver Carolus guilder 1540-1548. The 50 euro Gold Proof shows the same composition as the original gold Carolus guilder from 1521, which is celebrating its 5th centennium.
This exclusive coin trio includes the 2 euro Proof coin, the silver 10 euro commemorative coin and the 50 euro gold piece, brought together in an original transparent window case. Thus the beautiful coins always remain visible, while they are still perfectly protected against external influences. A real eye-catcher for your collection, for example to display on your desk or bookshelf.
