Jan van Eyck (ca. 1390 – 1441) enjoyed an excellent reputation as a Flemish painter throughout Europe already during his lifetime. He is known as one of the main representatives of the Flemish Primitives, a style of painting that is considered to be a prelude to Gothic art. Van Eyck pioneered the invention of oil painting and introduced realism as a refined painting technique. Moreover, he signed and dated nine of his works, which enabled him to grow from a painter of an anonymous modest craftsman into a self-confident, famous and learned individual. It is assumed that Jan van Eyck
and his much older brother Hubert (1366 – 1426) were born in Maaseik. Hubert started their most famous work “The Adoration of the Mystic Lamb”, which Jan completed in 1432. Their sister Margareta and brother Lambert also painted as a profession.
The 2 euro coin in Proof quality probably depicts Jan van Eyck himself in “Portrait of
a man in a red turban”, which he painted in 1433. The 10 euro silver Proof coin shows
part of the painting “Portrait of Giovanni Arnolfini and his Wife” and the 50 euro coin is
“Adoration of the Mystic Lamb” themed.
This exclusive coin trio contains all Van Eyck coins in Proof-quality in an original, transparent window case. This way the coins are visible, yet protected from influences from the outside. A true addition to your collection, which can also be displayed on your desk or book case.
