CELEBRATING 80 YEARS OF BENELUX CUSTOMS AGREEMENT

On September 5, 1944, with World War II approaching its end, consultations were held in London between the Belgian, Dutch and Luxembourg governments in exile. These contacts resulted in the creation of a unique, ground-breaking Customs Union, which shortly thereafter would become the BENELUX Treaty. Today, this important milestone celebrates its 80th anniversary and is therefore appropriately commemorated with the issuance of this new Benelux Euro set 2024. 80 YEARS OF THE BENELUX CUSTOMS AGREEMENT IN A NUTSHELL (1944 – 2024)

1944 >  Belgium, the Netherlands and Luxembourg sign a visionary agreement in order to create a customs union.

1948 >  Concretisation of the customs union: elimination of import duties on internal Benelux trade and introduction of common external tariffs for third countries.

1954 >  Agreement on free movement of capital in the Benelux.

1957 >  First assembly of the Benelux Parliament. 

1958 >  Signing of the final Benelux Treaty establishing the Benelux Economic Union.

1960 >  Official implementation of the provisions of the Benelux Treaty regarding the free movement of persons, goods, capital and services, the coordination of economic, financial and social policies and the common commercial policy for the three countries.

1971 >  Creation of the Benelux Office for Intellectual Property for registration of trademarks, designs and drawings in the Benelux area.

1974 >  Establishment of the Benelux Court of Justice (located in Luxembourg since 2016).

1985 >  Schengen Agreement: Benelux, France and Germany abandon internal border controls. No less than 22 other States follow the example.

2006 >  Treaty on cross-border police cooperation (joint patrols, checks, observation, pursuit of suspects...)

2008 >  Signing of a renewed Benelux Treaty adding a more extensive (political) content to the mainly economic cooperation, including sustainability, justice and internal affairs. Became applicable in 2012.

2014 >  The Liège Convention, allowing cross-border cooperation on road transport inspections.

2015 >  Automatic level recognition of diplomas and degrees within the Benelux.

2018 >  Conclusion of a new Benelux Police Treaty providing enhanced cross-border competences to law enforcement officers of the three countries.

2024 >  The Benelux customs agreement celebrates its 80th anniversary.
