In 2025, we celebrate the 650th anniversary of the Province of Utrecht! On May 17th, 1375, a historic document (Stichtse Landbrief) was signed in Utrecht, marking the beginning of Utrecht’s provincial democracy. Even 650 years later, this moment reminds us of the importance and value of democracy. To commemorate and celebrate this milestone, the Royal Dutch Mint is launching the Day of the Mint Set 2025, entirely dedicated to 650 years of the Province of Utrecht.
The Stichtse Landbrief
The Stichtse Landbrief is a document signed by representatives of the three estates (clergy, nobility and commoners) in Utrecht. With this document, Bishop Arnoud van Horne granted them a say in governance, justice, taxation, and war. The reason? The bishop was in financial distress and urgently needed additional funds, which required negotiations with the States. An agreement was reached on May 5, 1375, and it was officially ratified on May 17.
