The Eurovision Song Contest returns to the Netherlands. To celebrate the 65th anniversary edition the Royal Dutch Mint proudly presents the special Eurovision Song Contest issue. On 9 March the design of the issue was revealed in the venue Rotterdam Ahoy by Sietse Bakker (Executive Producer Event of the Eurovision Song Contest 2020) and Vincent Van Hecke (executive director Royal Dutch Mint) in the presence of the delegations of the 41 participating countries. This special anniversary issue is the result of an exclusive collaboration between the Royal Dutch Mint and the Eurovision Song Contest.
On the medal you see a relief in water. This is because the water management of the Netherlands plays a central role in the design. However, also the musical history of the Eurovision Song Contest plays an important part in it. Dutch music producer Eric van Tijn created an unintelligible mix of all winning songs so far, especially for us. This mix was played on a speaker with a bowl of water placed on top. Juan Sanchez-Castano , designer at the Royal Dutch Mint created this installation. The water used was taken from the Maas (a river in Rotterdam) and was given to Sanchez-Castano by the ‘Eurovision councilor’ of Rotterdam: Said Kasmi. By playing the mix on the speaker the vibrations created a relief in the water that was transferred to the final design of the medal via a 3D model. In this video you can watch how the design came about:
