The 5 guilders coin
After a year’s delay, it is finally happening: the UEFA European Football Championship is upon us! In 2000, the Dutch were also cheering the players on in front of their TV; or in a stadium, because the tournament took place in the Netherlands and Belgium that year. In honour of this special EURO edition, the Royal Dutch Mint issued the “EURO 2000 5 Guilders Coin”. In 1988, the 5 guilders banknote was officially replaced by the 5 guilders coin known the “Vijfje” (Fiver). The commonly used banknotes had such a high turnover rate that they wore out too quickly. Coins were the solution! The “EURO 2000 5 Guilders Coin” was the first and last 5 guilders commemorative coin.
A sporty design
The unique issue has been designed by Geerten Verheus and Michael Raedecker. The obverse of the coin shows a stylized portrait of Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands facing the left side, with a football profile on the background. There is also a football profile on the reverse with an engraving of the words “5 GULDEN” (5 Guilders) and “EK 2000” (EURO 2000). The coin is struck from nickel with a thin bronze coating, giving it a gold colour. The edge is serrated with a recessed inscription: “God zij met ons” (God be with us).
