The Dag van het Kasteel: “Day of the Castle” was celebrated on 1 June in the Netherlands. The first five visitors of De Haar Castle were therefore surprised with a Silver Ducat. The issue with De Haar Castle is the first in the new series “Dutch Castles”. In the series, each Silver Ducat depicts a different Dutch castle. De Haar Castle (Utrecht) and Heeswijk Castle (North-Brabant) have already been issued.
The Day of the Castle is an annually recurring event in the Netherlands, that since 2008 is traditionally organised on Whit Monday (a bank holiday in the Netherlands). Usually, a number of events are organised at all participating castles. Because of the corona crisis, those were cancelled. Interested parties could however read online stories on their website.Re-opening castles and museums in the Netherlands
1 June was also the day that De Haar Castle, like many other museums and castles in the Netherlands, once again opened its doors for visitors after the mandatory close down because of the corona crisis. With running water, a Turkish bath and even an elevator, De Haar Castle was a luxury place. The lush chambers give you an insight in the flamboyant life of the Van Zuylen family.
The first five visitors of De Haar Castle were surprised with the Silver Ducat depicting De Haar in honour of the Day of the Castle. Earlier this year the issue was ceremonially revealed in the presence of curator Katrien Timmers and Anetta de Jong, director of Stichting Exploitatie Kasteel de Haar. Heeswijk Castle, where the second issue of the series was recently revealed, has also opened its doors again.
