In 2019 we look back on 100 years of Dutch aviation, a special era with famous names! The first official Dutch commemorative coin of 2019 has been commissioned by the Ministry of Finance in honor of this wonderful anniversary. The Dutch artist Marijke van Warmerdam portrays with this design what aviation has offered us in a 100 years’ time and still offers nowadays: making our world smaller and expanding our perspective.
The plane is flying!
The Aviation Five Euro Coin is designed by the Dutch artist Marijke van Warmerdam. On the front side of the coin, the portrait of the King is depicted with a relief of dots that is reminiscent of radar images. On the reverse side, in a similar relief, a part of the Netherlands can be recognized. Here we see a contemporary airplane that casts its shadow in the form of a historic plane on the earth. The distance between the plane and its shadow symbolizes the elapsed time.
If the three coins - the largest in Silver, the middle in BU quality and the smallest in Gold - are next to each other, you can see that the position of the aircraft and its shadow is shifting; the plane is flying! In the Prestige Set all three coins can be admired next to each other.
