In 2021, Loevestein Castle celebrates the “Hugo Grotius Year”. PostNL issues a Gold Stamp in honour of the 400th anniversary of Hugo Grotius’s escape from the castle.
22 March 2021 marks the 400th anniversary of Hugo Grotius’s escape from Loevestein Castle. During the Eight Years’ War, the castle was used as a prison. The prisoners however were not criminals: they were state prisoners of the Republic of the Seven United Netherlands. Hugo Grotius was one of them. He regularly received a book chest from his sister in the city of Gorinchem. Upon arrival, guards searched the chest. When time after time nothing suspicious was found, their attention slipped. Hugo’s wife and their maid then devised a plan to let Hugo escape inside the chest. He disguised himself as a mason at his family’s house in Gorinchem and fled the city. It is one of the most famous stories in Dutch history.
