The newest issue in the Holland Coincard series “Famous Dutch Painters” is all about artist Frans Hals (1582 – 1666). The painter is one of the most famous Dutch painters, together with Rembrandt and Johannes Vermeer. Frans Hals was known as a productive, innovative portrait painter. His vibrant portraits, made with loose, energetic brushstrokes, made him world famous.
Design
The coincard contains a Dutch 2 euro coin and a bi-colour medal in BU-quality. The obverse depicts a self-portrait of Frans Hals, surrounded by a classical picture frame. The frame recurs on all issues in the series. The reverse of the medal shows a painter’s hand with the signature of Frans Hals. In this series, each reverse will show the name of the painter in question. The coincard shows famous works of the painter on both sides. On the obverse, a part of his famous militia piece ‘The Banquet of the Officers of the St. George Militia Company’ (1616). The reverse shows a fragment of his famous painting ‘Lute Player’ (1623).
