Jacobus Johannes Eden (Groningen, October 19, 1873) grew into one of the Netherlands' largest sports legends at the end of the 19th century. Although that is more than 100 years ago, his exceptional performance is still widely recognized. He was both world champion skating and cycling! The Royal Dutch Mint is therefore launching an official commemorative coin on behalf of the Ministry of Finance: the Jaap Eden 5 Euro Coin. As it is exactly 125 years ago in 2019 that Jaap Eden became world champion in cycling, the Royal Dutch Mint also issues a special Cycling Medal.
In this special Jaap Eden Silver commemorative set, the top performances of Jaap Eden on the skating and cycling track come together with the "Jaap Eden 5 Euro Coin" in Silver Proof and the "Jaap Eden Cycling Medal" in Silver Proof, packed in a beautiful skating rink standard.
Design Jaap Eden Commemorative Coin
The Jaap Eden Five Euro Coin is designed by artist Wineke Gartz. We see Jaap Eden who comes to skate towards us in the manner of a great champion: strong and unyielding, but also calm and self-evident. We see the bent posture of the winner who goes his own way, through storms and struggle, driven by the will to be the best. It even reminds a bit of the harsh winters of the past. The deep-lying scratches in the ice give the feeling of a Dutch landscape and symbolize the impression that Jaap Eden left as an athlete.
On the obverse, we see the scratches reflected. The impact of Jaap Eden literally presses through to the present. The superimposed scratches on the shiny fond form a festive, radiant background for the portrait of King Willem-Alexander. Read more about the design on our page "From the designer".
Design Jaap Eden Cycling Medal
The obverse of the medal shows Jaap Eden on his bike, ready to win the race. The reverse shows various elements in beautiful typography as was used in advertisements and posters in the time of Jaap Eden. You can read back, among others, "Jaap Eden", "Wereldkampioen", "125 jaar" and more. This detailed medal is designed by Juan Sanchez-Castano, modeler of the Royal Dutch Mint.
