Today, actor and presenter Jandino Asporaat struck the first coin in honor of the Summer Carinval Rotterdam. The event took place in the Rotterdam City hall. The issues are minted by the Royal Dutch Mint, in collaboration with Summer Carnival Rotterdam and the Center for Intangible Heritage Netherlands. The coins are directly available on the Royal Dutch Mint website.
Asporaat was very happy with the first strike: “I’m very honored to be here today. I was raised with the Summer Carnival on Curacao. It is a celebration of the success of Rotterdam, but also a celebration of us. It is beautiful to see that after all these years, the Summer Carnival is represented with a coin.”
Three issues
The Royal Dutch Mint is minting three issues for the 35th edition of the Summer Carnival Rotterdam: a medal in coincard, a silver issue with color detail and a gold issue. The colorful vibe of the Carnival is captured perfectly with all three issues. The obverse has an image of a participant of the Summer Carnival Rotterdam. It’s a queen of the carnival, chosen via the annual Royalty Election. On the silver issue the queen’s attire, the background with feathers and the foreground are colored in. The reverse of the issues contain the logo of the Inventory Intangible Heritage Netherlands. The silver and gold issues are delivered in colorfull packaging, with Certificate of Authenticity. The issues have limited issue an are directly available to order on the website.

The Street Parade is definitely the highlight: dozens of costumed carnivalists entertain the public with rousing music and dance. This multicultural party brings people from different cultures together: the carnival plays an important role in the growing respect for various cultural traditions.
