Splinter Chabot mints the very first 50 years recognition COC commemorative coin

Amsterdam – Today, writer Splinter Chabot has minted the 50 years recognition of COC Five Euro Coin. The first strike took place in Hotel Mercier, which was the head quarters of the organization for years. The commemorative coin is designed by Coen van Ham and is commissioned by the Ministry of Finance. Sacretary of State from the Finance department, Marnix van Rij, was also present at the First Strike. The sunflowers are handmade by the silversmiths in the studio of the Royal Dutch Mint, and are based on the famous painting Sunflowers (1889) by Vincent van Gogh. The very first issue was handed over this morning to Rob Groot, business director of the Van Gogh Museum.

The Ceremonial First Strike of the Woudagemaal 5 Euro Coin is Coming!

On 7 October 2020, the ceremonial First Strike of the Woudagemaal 5 Euro Coin will take place. The strike will be performed by Hans Vijlbrief (State Secretary for Finance - Tax Affairs and the Tax Administration) and “dijkgraaf” Luzette Kroon (the chair of the Wetterskip Fryslân, a Dutch water board in the province of Friesland). The Royal Dutch Mint’s historical screw press will be placed in front of the Woudagemaal for this special occasion. As tradition dictates, the First Day Issue will only be available on this day.

The Ir. D.F. Woudagemaal in Lemmer, Friesland, celebrates its 100th anniversary. In honour of this special moment, the Royal Dutch Mint launches a commemorative coin. On the reverse of the coin, the UNESCO World Heritage Site itself is found. The obverse depicts the Dutch King Willem-Alexander. It is the first time that the King is depicted on a commemorative coin with his beard. The “Woudagemaal 5 Euro Coin” is struck in commission by the Ministry of Finance.

Miffy herself was here to ceremonially strike the first medal, in the presence of mint master Stephan Satijn. The Royal Dutch Mint pays tribute to both the famous bunny and the beloved artist and writer with the new Miffy issues.

The reception took place in Hotel de Wereld in Wageningen, the Netherlands. Hotel de Wereld is known as the site where the full surrender of the German occupation in the Netherlands was officialised.

The Dag van het Kasteel: “Day of the Castle” was celebrated on 1 June in the Netherlands. The first five visitors of De Haar Castle were therefore surprised with a Silver Ducat. The issue with De Haar Castle is the first in the new series “Dutch Castles”. In the series, each Silver Ducat depicts a different Dutch castle. De Haar Castle (Utrecht) and Heeswijk Castle (North-Brabant) have already been issued.

The Dutch feel strongly connected on 4 and 5 May, respectively National Remembrance Day and Liberation Day. Especially in times like these the Royal Dutch Mint wishes to honour 75 years of freedom in interconnectedness and pursue the ceremonial First Strike of this commemorative coin in adjusted form. Because there is no audience present at the ceremony, the Royal Dutch Mint has arranged that interested parties can watch a livestream from their own home.

On 9 March the design of the issue was revealed in the venue Rotterdam Ahoy by Sietse Bakker (Executive Producer Event of the Eurovision Song Contest 2020) and Vincent Van Hecke (executive director Royal Dutch Mint) in the presence of the delegations of the 41 participating countries. This special anniversary issue is the result of an exclusive collaboration between the Royal Dutch Mint and the Eurovision Song Contest.

Jaap Eden, born on October 19, 1873 in Groningen, grew into one of the Netherlands' largest sports legends at the end of the 19th century. Although that’s more than 100 years ago, his exceptional performance is still widely recognized, for he was world champion skating and cycling! The Royal Dutch Mint is therefore launching an official commemorative coin on behalf of the Dutch Ministry of Finance: the Jaap Eden 5 Euro Coin. The ceremonial reveal of the design of the coin took place today at the Jaap Eden Ice Rink in Amsterdam. The unveiling was carried out by grandson Jaap Eden Junior, coin designer Wineke Gartz and Olympic skating champion (1988) Yvonne van Gennip.
