The Ir. D.F. Woudagemaal in Lemmer, Friesland, celebrates its 100th anniversary. In honour of this special moment, the Royal Dutch Mint launches a commemorative coin. On the reverse of the coin, the UNESCO World Heritage Site itself is found. The obverse depicts the Dutch King Willem-Alexander. It is the first time that the King is depicted on a commemorative coin with his beard. The “Woudagemaal 5 Euro Coin” is struck in commission by the Ministry of Finance.
The WoudagemaalThe Ir. D.F. Woudagemaal, named after engineer Dirk Frederik Wouda, is one of the ten UNESCO World Heritage Sites in the Netherlands. To this day, the Woudagemaal still plays a crucial role within the Frisian water authority. The steam pumping station and the steam engines are attractions for architectural or steam enthusiasts. The commemorative coin was designed by visual artist Berend Strik, who also designed the Rembrandt 5 Euro Coin in 2006. Here you can admire the new commemorative coin for the first time:
Sleek and innovative design
The obverse of the Woudagemaal 5 Euro Coin depicts King Willem-Alexander for the first time with his beard. The flag of the province of Friesland is found waving behind him. The reverse shows the Woudagemaal in straight and simple lines. The sluices connected to the station are drawn in the same angle as the strips of the flag on the obverse. On both sides of the coin, (parts of) the canals surrounding the Woudagemaal are depicted. The coin pays tribute to the historical steam pumping station and Dutch water management.
