The Ducaton is one of the oldest coins in the Netherlands: this silver coin was introduced in the Spanish Netherlands in 1618, and from 1659 onwards, the Ducaton was also issued by the Northern Netherlands. Every year, the Royal Dutch Mint issues a restrike of this coin: for 2026, a restrike from 1756, originating from Holland, is ready for you.

Ducaton from Holland, 1756

The Ducaton from the province of Holland, minted in 1756, will serve as the model for the official restrike in 2026. The Ducaton was minted by the provinces from 1659 onwards: all coins featured a knight on horseback, as well as the coat of arms of the province where the coin was minted. At the time, the “Silver Rider” weighed 32.779 grams and had a silver content of 941/1000.

The obverse depicts a crowned coat of arms of the United Provinces, supported on either side by a crowned lion. Around it is the inscription "CONCORDIA RES PARVÆ CRESCUNT," which translates from Latin as "Unity is Strength." The reverse features the Silver Rider, surrounded by the inscription "MO: NO: ARG: CONFŒ: BELG: PRO · HOL," which translates from Latin as "New Silver Coin of the Confederated Belgian Province of Holland."

Royal Delft Coin Holder

As per tradition, the Ducaton is delivered in a Royal Delft coin holder. The coin holder of this Silver Ducaton features an image of Amsterdam Castle Muiderslot, one of the most recognizable symbols of former province Holland and an important historical building in the Netherlands today. It is part of the Dutch Water Lines, a former defense line and now a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
