The Lion Dollar is an iconic trade coin that has been part of the annual program of the Royal Dutch Mint since 2017. The Lion Dollar owes its name to the depiction of the Dutch lion on the obverse and was first minted in 1575 by the provinces of the Netherlands. Each province had its own lion and its own mint where these coins were minted. The Lion Dollars were mainly used for maritime trade and quickly became internationally loved trade coins.

In recent years, the Royal Dutch Mint has restruck Lion Dollars from the most famous provinces, such as Utrecht, Zeeland, Gelderland, Holland and Overijssel. But did you know that Dutch cities have also minted Lion Dollars in the past? This year we are restriking the rare Lion Dollar from Nijmegen. Coincidentally, this year it has been 330 years since the last Nijmegen Lion Dollar was minted. Authentic copies of these Nijmegen Lion Dollars are extremely rare these days.
