For 2026, we will restrike a Leeuwendaalder from 1589, originating from Friesland. The beautiful details of this coin are perfectly showcased on the Official Restrike Leeuwendaalder Gold 2 Ounce.
Lion Dollar from Friesland
The 1589 Leeuwendaalder is a special example. After the Leeuwendaalder became popular in international trade, many provinces and cities began minting it. However, there was an interruption in 1586 due to the Leicester edict. During the reign of Robert Dudley (Earl of Leicester), it was decided to mint new coin types, including the ‘Leicesterreaal’ and the ‘Leicesterrijksdaalder’. However, on February 18, 1589, the States General authorized the minting of the Leeuwendaalder. After permission was granted, Friesland, Gelderland, Holland, Overijssel, Utrecht, and Zeeland joined the process. The year 1589 is the first year, in which examples from all provinces that minted this type, can be found.
