The ‘Scheepjesschelling’ is a Dutch shilling that was minted to emphasize the status of the Dutch Republic. This shilling was especially popular with the trading in the East. Therefore it was given the name ‘Scheepjesschelling’. At the Royal Dutch Mint, we restrike this trade coin not only in gold, but also in silver. The obverse of the Silver 1 Ounce ‘Scheepjesschelling’ 2024 from Gelderland shows a warship. Around the ship is a Latin legend: VIGILATE.DEO.CONFIDENTES’, which means ‘Trusting on God’. The reverse of the silver coin shows the provincial coat of arms of Gelderland and the inscription ‘MO.ARG.ORD:DVC.GELETCZ’. which means: New coin for the Duchy of Gelderland and the County of Zutphen.
