The Golden restrike of the “Scheepjesschelling” 2025 has arrived! Traditionally, the Royal Dutch Mint launches restrikes of popular trade coins. This also includes the “Scheepjesschelling”. In 2025, you can become the owner of the “Scheepjesschelling” from the province of Holland, which was minted in 1724. This is also the province where the “Scheepjesschelling” was introduced in 1670: at that time it had a currency of 6 penny’s.

Bygone times come back in top quality precious metals

Where could the “Scheepjesschelling” have been? To underline the status of the Republic, and because there were many inferior shillings in circulation, it was decided to mint a new, silver shilling. The coin was taken on all overseas adventures and would prove to be particularly popular in trade with the East. And that is still the case today: the restrikes are very popular among collectors. Both Gold and Silver coins are an interesting purchase and thanks to the top quality precious metal you will always have something beautiful to look at.  And, the Golden “Scheepjesschelling” restrikes from the previous years have all been sold out: make sure you don’t miss it.

Piedfort Edition

This Golden, Piedfort Edition restrike of the “Scheepjesschelling”, has the original diameter from the Holland “Scheepjesschelling”, but was minted in double thickness. Traditionally, Piedfort coins were used as a way of showing prosperity and power. In the sixteenth and seventeenth century, rulers across Europe started the tradition of giving “prestige pieces” to members of their court. Nowadays, Piedfort coins are real collector’s items. This gold restrike of the Scheepjesschelling is twice as thick and therefore twice as special.

Design

The obverse of the Golden Scheepjesschelling from Holland shows a warship. The text ‘VIGLATE.DEO.CONFIDENTES’ is around the ship, this motto means: ‘Trusting in God’. The reverse shows the provincial coat of arms of Holland and the inscription ‘MO.NO. ORG.HOLL.ET.WESTFRI’, which means: ‘New coin of the States of Holland and West Friesland’.

Golden restrike in special coin holder

For the golden “Scheepjesschelling”, the Royal Dutch Mint always chooses a special packaging. The Golden “Scheepjesschelling” 2025 comes to you in a unique round coin holder: in the lid, a compass in engraved. This is the perfect connection to the overseas trade in the 16th and 17th century.
