The Royal Dutch Mint honours the 70th anniversary of the Dutch Cancer Society (KWF) with a special issue! HRH Princess Beatrix performed the ceremonial First Strike of the Dutch Cancer Society medal today. This was the last First Strike by the Royal Dutch Mint at the Mint building in Utrecht before the move to Houten.
Crowning glory for 70 years of hard work
‘It is a great honour to have Princess Beatrix perform this coin strike for our 70th anniversary. KWF was founded by Queen Wilhelmina and since 1980, Princess Beatrix has been our patron. We’re very proud of that. On behalf of all who support KWF, I would like to thank everyone.’
- Johan van de Gronden, director of Dutch Cancer Society
HRH Princess Beatrix has just performed the First Strike of this special Dutch Cancer Society medal on the birthday of her grandmother and founder of KWF, Queen Wilhelmina. The ceremonial First Strike of the medal is also the start of the 70th collection week. From September 1st through 7th, 80,000 collectors raise money for more cancer research, prevention and for a better quality of life for people who are or have been sick.
Obverse
Queen Wilhelmina’s portrait is featured on the obverse of the coin. This image is based on the guilder with her likeness. The description on the coin says 70 JAAR KWF KANKERBESTRIJDING / KONINGIN WILHELMINA (meaning: 70 YEARS DUTCH CANCER SOCIETY QUEEN WILHELMINA), surrounded by an ornate ring.
Reverse
The Dutch logo of KWF is featured on the reverse, inside a growing shell, which represents growth and life. The Mintmaster privy is also featured.
