Herdenkingsmunten.be strives to make coin collecting accessible to everyone. This time, through an official reissue of a coin that would otherwise be inaccessible to many.

The Latin Monetary Union: precursor to the Euro...

As a coin collector, you have probably heard of the Latin Monetary Union, an ambitious monetary project launched in 1865 by France, Belgium, Italy and Switzerland, which later also included Greece among its members. The aim was to make the gold and silver coins of each of the participating countries uniform in terms of weight, dimensions and content so that they could be accepted as legal tender in every member state. However, small change and base metals were not covered by the provisions of this union, and it soon became clear that only a gold standard without silver coins was feasible. Due to the subsequent divergence of exchange rates, but above all due to the outbreak of the First World War and its economic aftermath, the LMU was formally dissolved in 1927.

This is why the Belgian gold 20 franc coin from 1920, which was to be included in the LMU, consists of only a few trial strikes and was never put into circulation. To compensate for this historical setback, and also because it is an exceptionally beautiful design, Commemorative Coins.be is now offering you a particularly faithful reissue based on the original design. However, this reissue is now minted in pure silver and coated with a beautiful layer of fine gold. This is called vermeil. Thanks to this sophisticated combination of two precious metals, the noble cachet of this herslag is fully preserved... while the price remains very affordable. Add to this the very limited mintage of only 300 reissues and you know immediately that you should not hesitate for a moment to get your hands on this unique issue.
