To honor the 70th anniversary of the Dutch Cancer Society (DCS), the Royal Dutch Mint has issued the Dutch Cancer Society Medal in coincard. The crowning glory of 70 years of invaluable work.
The history of the Dutch Cancer Society
On the occasion of the golden government anniversary of Queen Wilhelmina in 1948, she received an amount of two million guilders from the Dutch population. The Queen spent the money on setting up a foundation to fight cancer. This is how the ‘Dutch Cancer Society’ was founded in 1949. After the death of Queen Wilhelmina in 1962, Queen Juliana became patron of the KWF in 1963. In 1980, Princess Beatrix succeeded her mother as Queen and also as patron of the Dutch Cancer Society. The foundation has been active for 70 years and has achieved a great deal in preventing, discovering and treating cancer.
The medal
The Dutch Cancer Society Medal in coincard tells the story of 70 meaningful years of The Dutch Cancer Society (DCS). This foundation is committed to find ways to have less cancer, a better healing process and a better quality of life for people who have (had) cancer. Patients, collectors and researchers are featured on both sides of the coincard. These groups combined make it possible to reach the goals of the DCS. Together, we’re getting closer.
Obverse
Queen Wilhelmina’s portrait is featured on the obverse of the coin. This image is based on the Guilder with her likeness. The description on the coin says 70 JAAR KWF KANKERBESTRIJDING / KONINGIN WILHELMINA (meaning: 70 YEARS DUTCH CANCER SOCIETY QUEEN WILHELMINA), surrounded by an ornate ring.
Reverse
The Dutch logo of the DCS is featured on the reverse, inside a growing shell, which represents growth and life. The Mintmaster privy is also featured.
