It’s May, which means that the Golden Ducat Month has started. The Golden Ducats 2021 can only be ordered this month. Travel home with us this year, to the West!
Every year, the Royal Dutch Mint mints Golden Ducats, after originals from the 16th and 18th century, on behalf of the Ministry of Finance. The Golden Ducats of 2021 are the last ones in a series where we explore four international trade routes where the Golden Ducat played an important role, based on the four cardinal directions. The Golden Ducat Comes Home
After the wheat ears in the North, the Dutch East India Company (“VOC”) ship in the East, and a gold bar from the South, the series will be closed off with the West. The Golden Ducat comes home!
The obverse of the Golden Ducat 2021 is decorated with the recurring acanthus leaves, shells and the letter “W”. The Ducat also features a “Plakkaat” (Act). In the Dutch Republic, these “plakkaten” (large pieces of paper) were hung on central places in the city to inform the people of new laws. In the “Plakkaat of 4 August 1586”, the Golden Ducat was first codified as legal tender. Like previous years, the knight designed by Johan Willem Marmé can also be admired on the Golden Ducats.
