Description

The Zinc War Coin Set contains all five original historic coins from The Netherlands minted during World War II. It contains the following zinc coins: 1 cent, 2 ½ cents, 5 cents, 10 cents and 25 cents.

Dutch zinc coins from World War II
During the German occupation in The Netherlands all streets that were named after the Dutch royal family were renamed. All coins also had to be exchanged because of their royal reference. Metals were needed for warfare and there was already a shortage. From 15 January 1942 onwards zinc coins were introduced. These were designed by Nico de Haas (1907 – 1995) and were commissioned by De Nederlandsche Bank. The coordinated coins are two-dimensional and graphic. They do have the caduceus on them but lack the privy mark. Other than the name of the country, Nederland, all coins are free of all references to the Dutch royal Family. Even though (illegal) possession of the ‘old’ was punishable with 6 months imprisonment or a very large fine (one thousand Guilders), only few coins were eventually handed in.
