Op 1 januari is in Kroatië de euro ingevoerd als wettig betaalmiddel. Kroatië is daarmee het twintigste land binnen de Euro-zone.
De Euro vervangt de Kuna, waarmee vanaf 1994 werd betaald. Kuna is het Kroatische woord voor de marter, het dier dat wordt afgebeeld op de nieuwe 1-euromunt. Dit voert terug tot de middeleeuwen: martervellen werden toen op de Balkan gebruikt als betaalmiddel.
