With over 1.5 million visitors every year, the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam is one of the most popular museums in The Netherlands. The museum has the world’s biggest collection of works by Vincent van Gogh. For 50 years, the Van Gogh Museum inspires people with the work and life story of Vincent van Gogh. Especially for this occasion, the Royal Dutch Mint will launch a unique issue: the 50 years van Gogh Medal in Coincard.
50 years of access to Van Goghs masterpieces
After the passing of Vincent van Gogh, his works are managed by his brother Theo and his wife, Johanna van Gogh-Bonger. Their son and Vincent’s nephew, Vincent Willem, starts the Vincent van Gogh Foundation in 1962. He comes to an agreement with the Dutch State to build the Van Gogh Museum, where the family collection can be managed and preserved for future generations. The Van Gogh Museum is opened on June 2th 1973 by Queen Juliana. In 50 years, the museum has had over 53 million visitors. The museum organizes many exhibitions, with subjects that show and deepen the work and life of Vincent van Gogh and his time.
Everyone who thinks of Vincent van Gogh, usually thinks of one of his most famous works of art: the Sunflowers. This painting from 1889 is therefore used as inspiration for the coincard and medal. The coincard contains a medal and 50 euro cents to celebrate 50 years Van Gogh Museum. The medal contains one of the sunflowers on the obverse and the reverse shows the logo of 50 years Van Gogh Museum.
The obverse of the coincard, a part of the masterpiece Sunflowers (1889) is shown: sketch and painting alternate. Also the name of Vincent van Gogh can be discovered in the background of this side. The obverse of the coincard has the image of the Van Gogh Museum in Amsterdam.
