Production Process

How is a coin or medal produced? The production process at the Royal Dutch Mint consists of various phases, from design to production and from quality control to delivery:

1. The design is the basis of each coin. This is transferred to a working drawing.
2. The working drawing is converted into a 3D drawing through a digital modelling program.
3. The 3D drawing is digitally converted into a mirror image.
4. On the basis of the digital file a die is produced by laser, containing the mirrored image.
5. The metals for the coins to be minted are first milled to thin bars. Coin plates (blanks) are punched from this material.
6. Coins of any specific value must always have the same weight. Therefore a weight check takes place of both the blanks and the minted coins.
7. The coins are minted with the mint press.
8. Then a final check takes place and the coins are shipped to collectors or put into circulation!
