100 years ago, on July 25 (1921), the Belgium-Luxembourg Economic Union, abbreviated BLEU, was concluded between Belgium and Luxembourg. Initially, the BLEU would exist for a period of fifty years. The alliance was both a customs union and a currency union. This meant that the Belgian franc and the Luxembourg franc were linked. The exchange rates of the two currencies were the same until they were replaced by the euro in 2002.
In honour of this long-term peaceful alliance, the Royal Mint of Belgium has released a new 2 euro coin. The coin shows a double portrait of King Philippe I of Belgium and Grand Duke Henri of Luxembourg to the right. They look at the contour representation of Belgium and Luxembourg, the allies in the Belgium-Luxembourg Economic Union. The coin is packaged in an international coincard highlighting the affiliation of the two countries through the 100-year alliance.
