It’s important to remember those who fought for our freedom in Finland during the years 1939-1945.
Helsinki Mint launches, as commissioned by the Finland Ministry of Finance, a special collector’s coin to honor the veterans in Finland: the Finland 50 Euro “Finnish Veterans” 2025.
This special collector’s coin is made of both Gold and Silver and will be available in a very limited mintage. The coin is especially made to honor the Finland war veterans. The coin commemorates, honors and reminds us of the terrible consequences of war. The Finnish War Veterans have said it themselves: they appreciate peace more than anyone and never again want war in Finland or anywhere in the world.
The year 2025 is the perfect moment to honor the veterans with a coin, since the last age group that joined war will turn 100 this year. March 13th, 2025 marked 85 years since the end of the Winter War, the war in Finland that is known the most internationally. We also focus on 80 years of freedom since World War II. With this Finland 50 Euro “Finnish Veterans” 2025 we do not only honor the veterans, but we also show our respect to all the spouses and widows who supported their loved ones during the hard war years.
Design
The Finland 50 Euro “Finnish Veterans” 2025 is designed by Tapio Kettunen. On the obverse, Kettunen created three profiles with the use of negative space. The profiles that can be seen in the negative space are those of a war veteran on the left and of a soldier on the right. The negative space of the war veterans profile may indicate that almost all of the war veterans of 1939-1945 have left us, they continue their lives in the form of memories. In the case of the soldier, the negative space suggests the hope that no more new war veterans should be born. On the far right, a profile of a young person is also shown: the future of the country that hopefully never has to endure war. The reverse shows an altered version of the Finnish flag. The partially broken shape and jagged surface refer to the war.
