The newest issue in the Holland Coincard series “Famous Dutch Painters” is all about artist Johannes Vermeer (1632 – 1675). This painter is world-famous for his sublime use of light in his paintings. The sense of depth and detail are also features that recur in Vermeer’s work.

The coincard contains a Dutch 2 euro coin and a bi-colour medal in BU-quality. The obverse depicts a self-portrait of Johannes Vermeer, surrounded by a classical picture frame. The frame recurs on all issues in the series. The reverse of the medal shows a painter’s hand with Vermeer’s signature. In this series, each reverse will show the name of the painter in question. The coincard shows a self-portrait on the obverse and an image of “The Girl with a Pearl Earring” on the reverse. This is one of the most famous paintings by Vermeer.
