The Krugerrand was the first gold investment coin. The coin made it possible to invest in relatively small amounts of gold. Krugerrands have been minted by the South African Mint since 1967.

The design of the Krugerrand has remained unchanged since 1967. The springbok is an antelope that is common in South Africa and is also a national symbol of the country. Statesman Paul Kruger was president of South Africa from 1883 to 1900. The name 'rand' refers to the Witwatersrand region, where forty percent of the world's gold comes from.
