The Krugerrand was the first gold investment coin. The coin made it possible to invest in relatively small amounts of gold. Krugerrands have been minted by the South African Mint since 1967.
Krugerrands are among the best-known gold investment coins and are recognized and accepted worldwide.
To make the metal more hard, the gold in the Krugerrand is supplemented with a small amount of copper. This gives the coins their unique red glow. The gold content of the coins is 916.6/1000. This makes them slightly heavier than investment coins that are minted from pure gold.
The design of the Krugerrand has remained unchanged since 1967. The springbok is an antelope that is common in South Africa and is also a national symbol of the country. Statesman Paul Kruger was president of South Africa from 1883 to 1900. The name 'rand' refers to the Witwatersrand region, where forty percent of the world's gold comes from.
