The Lion Dollar is an iconic trade coin which has been a part of the Royal Dutch Mint annual program since 2017. The Lion Dollar is named after the image of the Dutch Lion on the obverse and was struck for the first time in the Netherlands in 1575. At that time, each province had their own lion and their own mint where the Lion Dollars were struck. The Lion Dollar was mostly used in sea trade and became an internationally used trade coin.
The lion from the province of Overijssel
After the restrikes from the provinces of Utrecht, Zeeland, Gelderland and Holland, the province of Overijssel now provides the original Lion Dollar the restrike is based on. It has been exactly 320 years since the Overijssel Lion Dollar was struck for the last time. Nowadays, the original 1701 Lion Dollar in good quality is very hard to find. This proves the popularity of the former trade coin.

In the sixteenth and seventeenth century, rulers across Europe started the tradition of giving “prestige pieces” to members of their court. Nowadays, Piedfort coins are highly wanted collector’s items. The gold Lion Dollar is also available in Piedfort edition.
