Schokland 5 Euro Coin 2018
Throughout the centuries, Schokland remained a mystery: sometimes land, sometimes an island and sometimes a marsh. Since the reclamation of the Noordoostpolder in 1942, it has been a four-kilometre-long panoramic island on dry land. The landscape and monumental buildings are evidence that an island once stood here. Schokland now offers a unique combination of nature and cultural history. It is a place between land and water, with a wealth of archaeological treasures up to 10,000 years old.
Design
The 5 Euro Schokland Coin was designed by Dutch artist and Amsterdam resident Katrin Korfmann. Her design uses the typical Dutch polder landscape as raster, framing the contours of the former island. This pattern is a symbol of the landscape's great cultural value. The outline of the former island is still the same as it was at the time of the reclamation. On the front of the coin features a portrait of King Willem-Alexander in profile, facing right: abstract yet recognizable. The portrait is a line drawing in the style of the landscape on the reverse, thus serving as a stylistic device for the connection between the King and the cultivated landscape.
