Day of the Mint Set 2024

The day is July 17th, 3:18 p.m. when the lives of thousands of people change forever. Malaysia Airlines Flight MH17, on its way to Kuala Lumpur, is being hit by a Russian missile above Ukraine territory. All 298 people on the plane, with 17 nationalities, die in the most horrible way possible. The news does not only hit fathers, mothers, partners, children, grandchildren, grandparents, brothers and sisters, friends and family. Also the rest of the Netherlands and the world are in deep mourning.

The MH17 catastrophe is 10 years ago in 2024, but still very much relevant. Relatives continue to fight for justice. Even though steps have been taken, the pain and sadness will forever remain. The Day of the Mint Set 2024 is therefore dedicated for those who lost their innocent lives on July 17th, 2014. We will never forget them.

Design

The Day of the Mint Set 2024 is a tribute to all victims of that one horrible day in 2014. Various images are visible on the packaging, including those of the MH17 National Monument and images of the arrival of victims in the Netherlands. In addition to the eight Dutch euro coins, you will also receive a medal. The obverse of the medal shows a man holding a flag: he is watching an airplane arrive. This is one of the most famous MH17 photos, taken upon the arrival of the plane containing victims. The text on the side reads “WE REMEMBER MH17 – 17 JULY 2014”. The reverse shows flowers, with a sunflower in the middle. Sunflowers can also be found at the National Monument. In the center of the flower is the word MH17.
