Design
The 5 Euro Wageningen University Coin was designed by Malin Persson, a Swedish artist who lives in Amsterdam. At the centre of the coin, we see the powerful and abstracted form of a sunflower. An important horticultural product, sunflowers are known as heliotropes, which means that the flower head turns to follow the sun throughout the day and then returns to its original position at night. This characteristic might be interpreted as a reference to the interests of Wageningen University & Research worldwide. On the obverse of the coin, the pattern of the sunflower is transformed into solid circles. These dots or 'cells' produce a visual transition into the stately portrait of King Willem-Alexander. The reverse displays a variation on the sunflower, in which the seeds represent agricultural land or fields as seen from above.
