On April 20, 1920, the seventh Summer Olympics opened in a brand new stadium on Antwerp's Kiel. Belgium was assigned the organization as a kind of compensation for the misery caused by the First World War. During the 1920 Summer Olympics, about 29 countries and 2,626 athletes participated and there were sports in 24 disciplines.

The seventh Olympiad was one with many firsts. For example, Belgian fencer Victor Boin takes the Olympic oath for the first time and the Olympic flag with the five rings is hoisted, with each ring symbolizing a world continent. Furthermore, pigeons were released for the first time as a symbol of peace.
