Raymond van Barneveld says goodbye to the professional darts sport this year. On February 8, 2020, he will celebrate his official farewell at AFAS Live, Amsterdam. To celebrate the farewell and glorious career of Raymond van Barneveld, the Royal Dutch Mint now issues a special medal!
Our dart legend "Barney" has been among the best darts players in the world for more than two decades. Van Barneveld became known when he became the first Dutch darts world champion in 1998 as a postman by winning from Richie Burnett. This was just the start of Van Barneveld's success. He can now call himself five times world champion: four times at the British Darts Organization (BDO) and once at the Professional Darts Corporation (PDC). In addition, Van Barneveld was knighted in 1999 by Princess Beatrix in the Order of Orange-Nassau.
Did you know that ... Raymond van Barneveld himself is also an avid coin collector?
The design
The 3D portrait of Raymond van Barneveld is shown on the obverse of the medal. The portrait is framed by the flights of darts arrows that together form a symbolic leaf crown; a graceful pearl border is displayed around it. In addition, the text "5-times World Champion" is shown with the 5 corresponding stars. Finally you will find our mint and mint master sign on the obverse.
On the reverse of the medal a dartboard is depicted.
You will find the Raymond van Barneveld Medal in a cool blister packaging with the famous Barney Army dart flight. Central to this flight is the obverse of the medal with the portrait of Raymond van Barneveld. The reverse of the packaging shows the silhouette of the winner Raymond van Barneveld in his triumphant pose. The reverse of the medal is also visible in the blister packaging.
