As Jan van Eyck’s works are categorised as Late Gothic, this coin is a perfect addition to the Gothic art theme of the Europe Star programme. The in-house designer of the Royal Mint of Belgium, Luc Luycx, drew his inspiration for this coin from the double portrait of the prosperous Italian textile merchant Giovanni Arnolfini and his wife Constanza. They resided in Bruges in 1434. The background of the obverse was created with Minted Photo Image (MPI): a technique which makes it possible to strike coins with images in high photo quality, matching real etching. The reverse shows the map of Europe in a large, pentagonal star, with the year, value and the country indication in three languages
This is the final issue in the Europe Star Euro programme.
