Foodbank Amsterdam Medal in Coincard

The Smiley Company, creators of the original 'smiley', celebrates its 50^th anniversary! In honour of this, the Royal Dutch Mint is issuing a special medal in coincard in collaboration with the Smiley Movement and the Foodbank Amsterdam. The entire proceeds of the Foodbank Amsterdam coincards will go to the Foodbank Amsterdam, so that they can distribute food boxes at Christmas. Get a smiley, give a smile!
 
Foodbank Amsterdam
More than a million people in the Netherlands live below the poverty threshold. They often do not have enough money to put food on the table. The Foodbank Amsterdam therefore provides approximately 1900 families with food boxes every week. Every Foodbank Amsterdam medal sold equals a food box: 100% of the proceeds will thus be donated to the Foodbank Amsterdam. The recipients can not only prepare a tasty meal during Christmas, but also in the days around Christmas! This way, those who do not have much money to spend can still enjoy the holidays.
 
Smiley Movement
Born in 1972, to spread feel-good news, the Smiley would go on to become one of the most important icons in graphic design, bringing people together through a creative message that spreads positivity and putting social and emotional learning at the top of the agenda. Smiley’s simple message of ‘Take The Time To Smile’  from 1972 is still relevant as ever, 50 years on.
 
In 2017, philanthropist and social entrepreneur Nicolas Loufrani – Smiley’s CEO – identified a gap in the market between the people looking for opportunities to give back and the millions of charitable causes in need of support and created Smiley Movement.

The Design
On the obverse of the medal you see the 50^th anniversary logo of The Smiley Company with their slogan: Take The Time To Smile! On the reverse is a hand holding the logo of the Foodbank Amsterdam. Against a background of smileys, the hand reaches for another hand. This symbolises the food box that is donated, giving the recipient a smile.
