Yesterday, January 30, Her Royal Highness Princess Beatrix of the Netherlands opened the theme year 'Rembrandt & the Golden Age 2019' in the Mauritshuis, The Hague. The event was initiated by the Dutch Bureau for Tourism, NBTC. This theme was chosen since it is 350 years ago that Rembrandt van Rijn passed away.

Rembrandt distinguished himself from his contemporaries by his variety of subjects. He created more than 300 works. The Golden Age, in which Rembrandt lived, was characterized by flourishing trade, scientific developments and a number of successful Dutch masters.
The theme year is a collaboration between different museums and cities. The Royal Dutch Mint is creating several issues in 2019 within this theme.
